The students at Jimmy Sandy Memorial School are walking on Wednesday, and they are asking the community to walk with them.
Naskapi Wellness Programs, Kathleen Tooma’s Beautiful Dawn Women’s Shelter, and the Naskapi Police are inviting everyone to join the students for an Orange Shirt Day community walk on Wednesday, September 30. The Women’s drumming group will be there.
The walk
Wednesday, September 30 at 1:20 p.m.
Outside the front of Jimmy Sandy Memorial School
Wear orange if you have it. Every Child Matters.
For our Elders who went to Residential School
Twenty minutes before the walk, at 1:00 p.m., the students want to recognize the Elders among us who attended Residential School.
If you are a Survivor and you feel comfortable coming, you are invited. If you would rather not, that is understood. Come only if the day allows it.
Please pass this along to your family members.
Also happening
Three door prizes will be drawn.
A note on the day
Naskapi Nation offices are closed Wednesday for the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, so the day is free to attend.
This is heavy ground for many families. The National Indian Residential School Crisis Line is free and open 24 hours at 1-866-925-4419, for Survivors and their families. The Hope for Wellness Helpline is at 1-855-242-3310. Kids Help Phone is at 1-800-668-6868, or text FIRSTNATIONS to 686868.
Let’s come together to acknowledge, educate, and heal.
