The Naskapi Nation of Kawawachikamach is embarking on the Green House Project to oversee food production for community and commercial purposes.

A greenhouse has been constructed near the Arena. A composting project has been initiated in Kawawachikamach to compost organic matter generated in the community, reducing waste buried in the regional landfill.

The Nation seeks to employ an individual to manage and operate the Greenhouse and the Composting Station.

This individual will oversee the Green House’s daily operations, raise awareness about plant cultivation and vegetable growing, recruit participants interested in sorting organic waste, and collect and compost organic waste.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Greenhouse 

  • Oversee inventory of plants
  • Plan species to be planted in conjunction with holidays, climate, time of year
  • Preparing the soil to plant bulbs, cuttings, and seeds to grow various types of plants
  • Ensuring that all plants under their supervision have optimal temperature and humidity levels, which allow them to reach their growth potential
  • Provide supervision over greenhouse workers or volunteers, if needed
  • Be knowledgeable about the stages of plant life and diseases that may occur
  • Noticing and eliminating any potential element that may prevent healthy plant growth, like pests, diseases, weeds, and fertilizer misuse
  • Performing daily maintenance operations on the plants, such as watering, weeding, and pruning
  • Setting up and maintaining irrigation systems to water plants, both outdoors and inside the greenhouse
  • Effectively manage greenhouse equipment and records 
  • Explore ways to improve processes for more efficient growth and harvest yields 
  • Forecast demand to determine plant populations
  • Mobilize organizations and people to help plant and maintain the greenhouse

Composting 

  • Prepare and implement an awareness campaign (radio, Facebook, door-to-door, etc.) to explain the composting project and recruit participants.
  • Keep up to date the participants register 
  • Support the participants and answer their questions
  • Prepare the bucket collection schedule 
  • Collect the buckets with organic waste at each participant’s building location.
  • Weigh the buckets with organic waste and keep an inventory of the quantity collected.
  • Operate the community composter according to the composting process (training will be provided to the selected candidate on the composting process) 
  • Wash the buckets (with a commercial bucket washer) and distribute clean buckets to the participants. 
  • Keep clean and secure the equipment at the composting facility
  • Take necessary precautions with the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment
  • Distribute the compost when available (e.g., to the community greenhouse)
  • Advise your supervisor on any maintenance or supplies (e.g., buckets and wood pellets) needs and on the management of the Composting Project.

REQUIREMENTS

Certification

  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence required 

Training

  • The selected candidate will receive training on the different components of the Green House and the Composting Project.

  • Speak Naskapi
  • Reading, writing, and speaking in English
