The Naskapi Nation of Kawawachikamach is seeking a Payroll Assistant for a temporary one-year position starting in June 2026.

Position Overview

This is a temporary position based at the Nation Office in Kawawachikamach, working 35 hours per week, Monday through Friday. Overtime work will be needed.

Under the supervision of the Payroll and Benefits Officer, the selected candidate will help in all necessary tasks in conducting the payroll process. We are looking for a meticulous and efficient Payroll Assistant, while supporting confidentiality and compliance with all Naskapi Nation employees.

Salary is based on the NNK Salary Scale.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Specific duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Collect timesheet data and payroll information for data entry
  • Calculate wages, benefits, commissions, etc., to prepare and process paychecks and deposits
  • Ensures all annual leaves, sick leaves, etc., is correct and completed in payroll system
  • Validates and verifies overtime work and correct rate(s) with supervisors and managers
  • Resolves payroll discrepancies and issues with urgency
  • Assistant will be the first point of contact to ALL payroll related queries
  • Help in preparation of payroll audits
  • Help with new employee onboarding by recording payroll profiles
  • Maintain employee confidence and protect payroll operation by keeping all information confidential
  • Additional duties as required by Payroll and Benefits Officer

Requirements

Education:

A high school diploma is needed for this position, but preference will be given to degrees in Accounting, Bookkeeping or relevant college diploma.

Selected candidate must be willing to undergo training.

Languages:

  • Fluency in English, spoken and written
  • Knowledge of French will be considered an asset
  • Knowledge of Naskapi will be considered an asset

Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Must have persuasive communication skills
  • Have interpersonal skills
  • Have computer skills, financial software will be considered an asset
  • Ability to work under pressure in a prompt matter
  • Flexibility with work hours
  • Have a keen sense of responsibility, such as supporting an organized filing system
  • Maintain absolute confidentiality!
