Kawawachikamach, Québec — As Chief and Council of the Naskapi Nation of Kawawachikamach (NNK), we wish to address our members and our Innu neighbours regarding recent concerns surrounding the Pre-Development Agreement (PDA) signed with Torngat Metals.

In recent weeks, tensions have risen and misinformation has circulated regarding the nature and intent of this agreement. Differences of opinion are natural when the future of the land is at stake. We understand and share the concerns being expressed, and we respect the right of others to hold their views. However, we cannot accept misinformation that misrepresents our intentions or our actions. 

Our council and the previous council have not signed any agreements approving a mine. Only Pre-Development Agreements have been signed by the Naskapi Nation. Our decision to enter into Pre-Development Agreements is guided by one principle: to protect our people and our land.

The Naskapi Nation has shared this land with our neighbours for millennia and will continue to do so. We may choose different approaches to protect our rights and interests, but our relationships must remain grounded in respect. We remain committed to open communication with our members and neighbouring communities.

I strongly encourage Naskapi members to attend the community meeting next Thursday, February 19th, at 6 p.m., where the content of the PDA will be presented and the mining and environmental assessment processes explained.

The protection of the land, the caribou, the environment, and the well-being of our community remains our priority.

Déclaration de la Cheffe et du Conseil concernant l’Entente de pré‑développement avec Torngat Metals

Kawawachikamach, Québec — En tant que Cheffe et conseil de la Nation naskapie de Kawawachikamach (NNK), nous souhaitons nous adresser à nos membres ainsi qu’à nos voisins innus au sujet des préoccupations récentes entourant l’Entente de pré‑développement (EPD) signée avec Torngat Metals.

Au cours des dernières semaines, les tensions ont augmenté et des informations erronées ont circulé quant à la nature et à l’objectif de cette entente. Il est normal que des opinions divergent lorsque l’avenir du territoire est en jeu. Nous comprenons et partageons les préoccupations exprimées, et nous respectons le droit de chacun d’avoir son point de vue. Toutefois, nous ne pouvons accepter la diffusion d’informations inexactes qui déforment nos intentions ou nos actions.

Notre conseil et l’ancien conseil n’ont signé aucune entente approuvant une mine. Seules des ententes de pré‑développement ont été signées par la Nation Naskapi. Notre décision de conclure des ententes de pré‑développement est guidée par un seul principe : protéger notre peuple et notre territoire.

La Nation Naskapi partage ce territoire avec nos voisins depuis des millénaires et continuera de le faire. Nous pouvons choisir des approches différentes pour protéger nos droits et nos intérêts, mais nos relations doivent rester fondées sur le respect. Nous demeurons engagés envers une communication ouverte avec nos membres et les communautés avoisinantes.

J’encourage fortement les membres naskapis à assister à la réunion communautaire jeudi prochain, le 19 février, à 18 h, où le contenu de l’Entente sera présenté et où les processus miniers et d’évaluation environnementale seront expliqués.

La protection du territoire, du caribou, de l’environnement et du bien‑être de notre communauté demeure notre priorité.
