Today marks an important and long-overdue milestone for the Naskapi Nation. The Council of the Naskapi Nation of Kawawachikamach and the Board of Directors of the Naskapi Development Corporation have officially adopted a Joint Resolution that renews and formalizes their cooperative relationship.  

For the first time in many years, both leadership bodies have committed to a shared path built on open communication, transparent collaboration, and a unified vision for the well-being and prosperity of all Naskapi people.  

What the Joint Resolution Commits To

The agreement outlines several major commitments that will guide how the two bodies work together going forward:

  • Strengthening communication and coordination between the Council of the Naskapi Nation of Kawawachikamach and the Board of Directors of the Naskapi Development Corporation; including joint planning, regular coordination meetings, and exploring additional mechanisms to improve collaboration.  
  • Working together on economic development and cultural initiatives to reduce duplication, maximize efficiency, and ensure that programs and resources serve the community as effectively as possible.  
  • Supporting the Naskapi Development Corporation’s work to secure permanent and stable funding from the Government of Québec so that its mission and long-term plans can be fully realized.  
  • Mandating the Naskapi Constitution Working Group to explore how the Nation’s future Constitution could formally reflect the renewed relationship between the Naskapi Nation of Kawawachikamach and the Naskapi Development Corporation; while respecting the distinct roles and expertise of each body.  
  • Designating representatives from both the Council of the Naskapi Nation of Kawawachikamach and the Board of Directors of the Naskapi Development Corporation to serve as primary points of contact; ensuring steady communication and progress.

Both leadership bodies have formally recognized the individuals who dedicated their time, insight, and effort to the drafting, consultation, and review of this Joint Resolution. Contributors include:

The resolution is signed by the full Council of the Naskapi Nation of Kawawachikamach and the full Board of Directors of the Naskapi Development Corporation.
