Tata Steel Minerals Canada Limited (TSMC), headquartered in Montreal, operates an iron ore mining and processing facility in the provinces of Newfoundland, Labrador, and Quebec. TSMC is part of the Tata group of companies, one of the world’s 10 largest steel producers and a Fortune 500 company.
TSMC is seeking an Assistant Manager – Community Relations to join their highly skilled Community Relations team. This permanent full-time position can be based in the Schefferville area, and it can work from Monday to Friday with a standard 8 hours/day schedule, with some flexibility, or work a 2-week on/off fly-in/fly-out rotation. The main pick-up points are St. John’s, Gander, Deer Lake in NL, Halifax, NS, Moncton, NB, Montreal, and Quebec City, QC.
The successful candidate, who will report to the Community Relations Manager, will be mainly responsible for liaising with Aboriginal communities in the Schefferville area, fostering positive relationships, and ensuring a constructive presence in the community.
Key Responsibilities
- Contribute to maintaining positive relationships with the Aboriginal communities of Matimekush-Lac John and Kawawachikamach, as well as with the members of these communities who work at the TSMC mine site;
- Understand the needs, challenges, and concerns of the Aboriginal communities with respect to employment, training, environmental and social issues;
- Work closely with TSMC operational site managers and Aboriginal community employment offices and educational institutions to support the recruitment, training, professional advancement and retention of Aboriginal workers;
- Provide support and guidance to the local communities in their search for employment and during employment, as required;
- Organize and maintain a TSMC presence at community events;
- Facilitate cultural awareness sessions at the mine site;
- Organize, participate in, and record discussions during committee meetings and other ad hoc meetings.
Desired profile
- A background in communications, human resources or any other discipline deemed appropriate with relevant experience will be considered a strong asset;
- Experience and interest in working in a northern mining environment;
- Excellent communication and networking skills;
- Ability to communicate in English and French, both written and oral;
- Knowledge of Innu/Naskapi languages will be considered an asset;
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision;
- Cultural sensitivity and excellent interpersonal skills;
- Demonstrates strong attention to detail and a diplomatic approach to conflict resolution.
