The Naskapi Nation is inviting all community members to an important discussion about the future of our caribou hunts. This meeting will bring everyone up to date on the status of the George River, Leaf River, and Woodland Caribou herds, and it will give residents the chance to weigh in on how upcoming hunts should be structured.
The session will cover two main topics.
- Current status of the George River, Leaf River and Woodland Caribou herds
- Members will hear updated information on population trends, herd health, and the conditions that are shaping current harvesting decisions.
- Decision making for the next caribou hunts
- This discussion will look at the steps needed to plan responsible and sustainable hunts.
- We will talk through key questions.
- Which herd can be harvested
- How many caribou can be taken from each herd
- Where hunting can take place
- How to proceed when the hunt is outside of the Naskapi sector
This event is meant to give everyone the information they need and to gather feedback from hunters, families, and anyone concerned about the long-term health of the herds.
