The Naskapi Archaeology Project is a community effort to learn about and protect the places where our ancestors once lived, traveled, and worked. Since 2021, the project has brought together Naskapi Elders, youth, and archaeologists to explore the lands around Cambrien Lake and Nachicapau Lake. These are places that hold deep cultural meaning for our Nation.

The goal of the project is not only to uncover artifacts, but also to reconnect our community with these ancient sites and stories. Each discovery, from a simple stone tool to the remains of a hearth, adds to our understanding of how Naskapi families lived on the land for generations.

Fieldwork takes place in summer, with teams surveying, mapping, and carefully recording what they find. Elders guide the process by sharing traditional knowledge and place names, while younger members learn the skills of archaeology and stewardship. Together, this work helps us protect our heritage for future generations.

Next week, the archaeologists will return to Kawawachikamach to present their findings from the past few seasons. In the days leading up to their visit, we will be sharing some of the discoveries and stories from the project, showing how the past continues to shape who we are today.
