The Naskapi Nation of Kawawachikamach is pleased to announce the results of the December 5, 2024, elections for three key positions on the Taasipitaakin Trust. These elections ensure representation for youth, elders, and the general population, fostering accountability and inclusivity in managing community resources.

Election Results

The following individuals were elected to the Taasipitaakin Trust:

  • Trustee for YouthElena-Marie Ashini-Pien (elected by acclamation)
  • Trustee for the General PopulationJimmy Shecanapish (elected by acclamation)
  • Trustee for EldersMichael Sandy

These trustees will join the seven-member board responsible for managing the Trust’s funds, which include resources from the Aganow Agreement and other mining and commercial activities. Their duties include prudent investment, fund administration, and regular reporting to the community.

About the Trustee for Elders Election

The election for the Trustee for Elders position included a competitive voting process. A total of 100 ballots were prepared, with the following breakdown:

  • Votes cast for Michael Sandy: 23 (winner)
  • Votes cast for Elizabeth Mameanskum: 0

The remaining ballots were either unused or did not meet election criteria.

The Role of the Taasipitaakin Trust

Established in July 2023, the Taasipitaakin Trust safeguards the economic future of the Naskapi Nation. Its mission is to invest and administer funds responsibly for the benefit of future generations.

The elected trustees will serve the following terms:

  • Trustee for Youth: 2 years
  • Trustees for Elders and General Population: 3 years

Their work is critical to ensuring the long-term sustainability of resources and enhancing transparency with the community.
