Requirements

Education and certification

  • A bachelor’s degree is required for this position, but relevant diplomas will also be considered. 
  • Qualified persons of First Nations Ancestry will be given preference in accordance with s.16(1) of the Canadian Human Rights Act.

Experience

  • a certificate of general health and safety on construction sites (ASP);
  • a valid driver’s license;
  • relevant experience in a similar position (an asset).

Languages

  • Fluency in English and Naskapi;
  • Written knowledge of English;
  • Basic knowledge of spoken French;
  • Knowledge of written French will be considered an asset.

  • Demonstrated superior interpersonal & negotiation skills, management ability, leadership, teamwork, and judgment. 
  • Strong organizational and coordination skills with demonstrated sound judgment, tact, initiative, and flexibility.

Job Description

Report directly to the Director-General and Construction Director and work closely with the Nation’s Partners, Subcontractors, and other Nation employees. The Mechanic Supervisor (“MS”) is to lead, direct, and oversee the work of a team of mechanics in a repair and maintenance facility. The supervisor is responsible for ensuring that all repairs and maintenance are completed in a timely and efficiently, as well as ensuring that the team is properly trained and follows all safety protocols. The supervisor may also provide repair estimates and quotations, guide other mechanics, and ensure that all customer service standards are met. The Mechanic Supervisor represents the Nation to clients, coordinates all stakeholders, and ensures the optimization of the budget, schedule, and quality of service from the initiation to the completion of the projects.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Planning and organizing work assignments for mechanics;
  • Ensuring that work is completed promptly;
  • Maintaining records of work completed by mechanics;
  • Supervising mechanics in the use of tools and equipment;
  • Providing technical advice to mechanics;
  • Overseeing the quality of repairs and maintenance;
  • Ordering parts and supplies;
  • Recruiting and training new mechanics;
  • Repair vehicles using specialized tools and equipment;
  • Perform maintenance and repair work on vehicles;
  • Supervise and train mechanics in proper repair and maintenance techniques;
  • Create work schedules and assign duties;
  • Track inventory and order parts as necessary;
  • Communicate with customers to determine the nature of mechanical problems;
  • Diagnose problems and inspect for safety;
  • Other tasks may occasionally be assigned to by the Director-General and/ or Council, as the case may be.
