As it is important to highlight the determination and commitment of Indigenous students in their school careers, the Iron Ore Company of Canada is pleased to encourage students to pursue post-secondary studies and to support them in achieving their objectives by offering continuing education scholarships. 

Here’s what you need to know 

NUMBER, VALUE, AND DURATION OF SCHOLARSHIPS 

Nine scholarships valued at $ 2500 Canadian are available to students at the bachelor’s degree or college diploma level. These scholarships are available for up to five years or until a first degree or diploma is obtained. 

ELIGIBILITY 

You are eligible if you: 

Are a member of one of the following Indigenous nations or communities: 

  • Innu Nation 
  • Matimekush Lac-John 
  • Naskapi Nation of Kawawachikamach 
  • NunatuKavut Community Council 

Are planning to start full-time studies in your first bachelor’s degree or college diploma program in Fall 2024. 

Are planning to graduate or have graduated with a high-school or college diploma between 1 August 2023 and 31 July 2024. 

ELIGIBLE INSTITUTIONS 

You can study at Canadian educational institutions that have recognized degree, diploma granting powers or their affiliates (e.g., universities, colleges). 

FIELDS OF STUDY PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS 

Your program of study is restricted to the following IOC-related fields of study as accepted by IOC: 

  • Engineering (mechanical, electrical, civil, mining, automation, etc.)
  • Geology
  • Health, safety and the environment
  • Human resources
  • Finances
  • Marketing
  • Information technology/information systems
  • Business administration (commerce)
  • Communications
  • Mechanical and electrical maintenance 

CONDITIONS/RESTRICTIONS 

If you start post-secondary studies in January, you are eligible for the summer competition of the same year. 

If you have previously held an Iron Ore Company of Canada Scholarship, you are eligible to re-apply, but only if you have previously completed a college diploma and are planning to enter into a program leading to a first bachelor’s degree. 

The Iron Ore Company of Canada retains the right to change or end the sponsorship of the scholarship plan without notice. 

HOW TO APPLY? 

To apply for the scholarship, please submit an online application no later than 1:00 PM EDT, June 26, 2024, by visiting https://portal.scholarshippartners.ca/welcome/IronOre_EN/

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS: 

A copy of your most recent transcript showing all available grades is required. 

A 150 to 200-word personal statement. The personal statement should describe who you are, your interests and future goals, and your connection and engagement with your Indigenous community. 

Remember, your application must be complete to be evaluated, and deadline extensions will not be granted. 

EVALUATION CRITERIA 

Applications are assessed on academic performance and the quality of personal statement. 

SELECTION PROCESS 

Selection of scholarship recipients will be made by each participating community in accordance with their own practices and in collaboration with representatives of the Iron Ore Company of Canada. 

All applicants will receive confirmation by email of the results of the selection process, once available. 

SUCCESSFUL APPLICANTS 

You will receive scholarship confirmation in August. When you receive your confirmation, complete the online acceptance process and submit any necessary documentation, which includes proof of registration from your educational institution. 

SCHOLARSHIP PAYMENT 

Payment will be made after the acceptance process and document review. It can take 6 to 8 weeks, depending on the method of payment chosen. SPC will forward payment of the scholarship to the scholarship recipient by electronic funds transfer (EFT) on behalf of the Iron Ore Company of Canada. 

Please make sure to pay your tuition fees within the defined time frame, regardless of the timing of scholarship payment.
