For about three years, the Naskapi Nation has been working on an agreement with Hydro-Québec. It is called the ᐅᔅᒋᔾ ᐃᔅᑯᑕᐤ (Uschiy Iskutaaw) Agreement.

Nothing has been signed. Before anything goes further, we want to hear from you.

Details

  • When: Saturday, October 24, 2026, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m.
  • Where: Naskapi Community Center
  • Dinner provided
  • Can’t come? Watch it live on the Naskapi Nation of Kawawachikamach Facebook page.

Deputy Chief Nathan Uniam will explain what is in the agreement and what happens next. Elders, youth, and adults are all encouraged to come.

What is the agreement about?

Two Hydro-Québec projects changed our land, our harvesting, and our way of life:

  • The Caniapiscau River diversion, built from 1981 to 1985
  • The Churchill Falls power plant, built from 1971 to 1974

Naskapi people were never compensated for either one.

The agreement deals with both. It also sets out how Hydro-Québec has to work with us on future energy projects on Nuchimiyuschiiy, like new power plants, wind projects, and power lines.

You will decide

The agreement will not be signed without you. Here is what comes next:

  • October: Community meetings to share information and hear your questions
  • November: The negotiating team brings your feedback back to Hydro-Québec
  • December: A community update on the final agreement
  • January 2027: A community vote, called a referendum

Bring your questions, your concerns, and your ideas. We will start with a meal together.
